The Vineyards at Spyglass Ridge
Winery.
The atmosphere
and earth in central Pennsylvania's seemed to be good growing
conditions for grapes. The typical warm days and cool nights were
perfect; humidity and rainfall were less here than in the southeast
and the soil was well-drained and shallow. All this coupled with
the gentle slope of the farmland promised many good growing seasons
for Spyglass.
Spyglass Ridge Winery has a variety
of soils that enable our vineyard manager to match the right soils
with the optimum combination of rootstock, clone selection and
cultivation practices. The diversity of terrain in our vineyards
yields a wide selection of fruit to work with when crafting each
Spyglass Ridge wine.
Carefully tended vines produce
balanced crop yields - with an insistence on quality over quantity.
The costly and time consuming methods involved in growing grapes-
specified by vineyard blocks or even row-by-row selections --
result in wines with intense flavors and soft, supple structure.
Spyglass Ridge Winery utilizes
modern viticulture science in the vineyards to grow the best grapes.
They also examine the physical properties of the soils in each
vineyard, measuring depths of soil horizons, rooting depth and
water holding capacity. By properly understanding the soils, we
can accurately address any fertilization and irrigation needs
throughout the year.
2008 will see the expansion of Spyglass Ridge Wineries vineyard with additional 8 acres of new vines which will include Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir & Riesling grapes
Spyglass is home to over 20,000 grapevines
on 14 acres of fertile land and plenty of room to grow. Over 10,000
gallons of wine was fermented last year alone in their 25 fermentation
tanks- a goal the winery hoped to achieve in 5 years, but reached
it in just two years of operation.
And here's
a little fun fact.
One barrel of wine makes about 20 cases, or 1200 glasses. A ton
of grapes equals 720 bottles of wine, or 60 cases. One vine annually
produces between four and six bottles of wine, or 20 and 30 glasses.
Each bottle of wine contains about 2.8 pounds of grapes; each
5-ounce glass of wine a little over half a pound.
